Mengzi Christian Church
Mengzi, Yunnan, China
In 1926, the China Inland Mission established a sanctuary at No. 27 Gexue Street, planting a new faith in the ancient soil of Mengzi, Yunnan Province. This highly visible structure stands out in the old city's urban landscape, surrounded by the echoes of imperial history.
The church's early decades mirrored the turbulent shifts of twentieth-century China. Today, the church is integrated into the Gexue Yi historical and cultural district. Following a protective restoration initiated in December 2021, the building harmonizes with neighboring landmarks. Visitors can feel the cool surface of the restored walls, which stand alongside the historic Wenchang Temple and the residence of Yin Zhuangtu, a Qing dynasty imperial tutor. The scent of old wood and the visual contrast of the church's modern lines against the traditional tiled roofs of the neighborhood create a unique sensory experience.
The church now serves as the administrative headquarters for regional Protestant organizations, including the Honghe Prefecture Christian Association and the local Three-Self Patriotic Movement Committee, established here in December 2016. In June 2024, the sanctuary filled with the sound of solemn vows during a major ordination ceremony. The Yunnan Christian Council ordained seven pastors, including Yang Guangde, and one elder, Xu Shuangfen, before a congregation of two hundred witnesses.
Footsteps on the stone pavement of Gexue Street connect the past to the present. The church remains an active spiritual center, its presence woven into the daily life of the Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture. It stands as a monument to endurance, where the prayers of the present mingle with the memories of a century of faith.
