Luxi Guanyin Monastery

On a small rocky hill in Yunnan's Luxi County, the Luxi Guanyin Monastery stands directly adjacent to the historic Wu Temple. Its origins began in the Ming Dynasty when a man named Yang Xiaolong first established its foundations. By the early seventeenth century, the structure had fallen into severe decay. In 1621, the first year of the Tianqi era, a local scholar named Zhang Yuchen, his brother-in-law Zhao Kuiwei, and a gentry member named Dai Wenming financed a complete reconstruction. They acted after a legendary vision of a weeping woman in white, believed to be Guanyin Bodhisattva. Historically, locals also called this sanctuary the White Clothes Nunnery and the Ancient Temple of Jiuhuang.

The monastery ascends through three distinct geographic levels. At the summit, the south-facing Yuantong Treasure Hall houses statues of Guanyin, Manjushri, and Samantabhadra. Nearby, the Zisun Hall contains figures of the Queen Mother of the West and the goddess of childbearing.

Below the summit, the middle level features a six-sided, thirteen-story gold-coated Thousand Buddha Pagoda. Its surface is carved with seated Buddha figures that catch the mountain light. The east wing room houses the Medicine Buddha, Suryaprabha, Candraprabha, and the Medicine King alongside armed celestial guardians. The west wing room shelters Ksitigarbha, folk wealth gods, and longevity deities.

At the bottom level, a deep, clear ancient well sits on the left, next to a building enshrining the Dragon King and Skanda. For generations, the nearby Lanyi Winery drew this pristine water to distill its liquor. Further down, a mid-mountain pavilion houses the Maitreya Buddha, leading to the Qingchi pond at the foot of the hill, where stone balustrades, weeping willows, and reeds frame the water.

Today, the scent of osmanthus trees, the rustle of Luohan bamboo, and large banana groves fill the air. A resident master from Baohua Temple in Gejiu guides the daily prayers. The monastery remains connected to the landscape, bordered by the Hetaochong Reservoir, constructed between 2016 and 2017, and the ancient paths of Yunnan.
