Lin'an Prefectural Government Office

In 1382, Vice-Prefect Xu Xin oversaw the relocation of the Lin'an Prefectural seat from Tonghai to Jianshui, establishing a sprawling administrative complex. Over the next five centuries, this seat of power directed the political, military, and economic life of southern Yunnan. One hundred and eighty-four prefects governed from this site, leaving physical marks of their tenure on the stone and timber.

Today, the reconstructed complex spans 51.75 mu, organized along three longitudinal axes and six successive courtyards. Visitors enter through the original Qing Dynasty main gate, where the heavy wood of the doors stands near the "drum of inquiry." Outside, stone warning tablets caution those who enter. Inside, the central axis stretches 211 meters long and 42 meters wide, leading directly to the ceremonial Yi Gate.

Beyond this gate stands the stone "Gong Sheng Ming" Archway. On its reverse side, the sharp, chiseled characters of the Northern Song calligrapher Huang Tingjian warn officials that the people are easily oppressed, but heaven is difficult to deceive. Past the archway, the 495-square-meter Main Hall retains its original Qing Dynasty roll-shed roof, where the scent of aged timber lingers over the prefect's bench.

Behind the Main Hall, a quiet pond grows white lotuses. This pool served as a visual pun for "lianchi," reminding officials of honor, shame, and clean governance during trials. Nearby, the stone tablets hand-carved by Prefect Li Erzhang in 1728 display the characters for loyalty, filial piety, incorruptibility, and honor. Other administrators left different legacies. Prefect Zhang Yushu donated his own grain to establish charity granaries during a famine, dying at his post. The local people remembered his clean record, calling him "a flake of Lin'an snow."

The six administrative departments flank the central axis, representing the imperial division of labor. Through these restored spaces, the daily realities of imperial governance become tangible. The heavy stone, the quiet lotus pond, and the original timber roof structures connect modern observers directly to the administrative history of Yunnan.
