Lijiang He Zhiqiang Former Residence

In October 1934, He Zhiqiang was born inside a modest Naxi peasant home in Ronghua village, Lijiang. Built in 1859 during the Qing Dynasty, the house featured traditional timber frames and thick mud-brick walls. He left this rural homestead in 1952 to study engineering, eventually serving as the Governor of Yunnan Province from 1985 to 1998. While he managed provincial budgets and negotiated national tobacco policies to fund regional development, his disabled brother remained at the family home, farming the quiet soil.

On February 3, 1996, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Lijiang, killing thousands and shattering the region. In Ronghua, the violent tremors reduced eighty percent of the village to rubble. At the governor's childhood home, the heavy external earthen walls collapsed into heaps of dry dust, blocking the entrance with broken clay. The skeleton of the house survived. The traditional Naxi column-and-tie timber joints groaned under the seismic waves, absorbed the shock, and remained standing.

During a post-earthquake inspection, Vice Premier Wu Bangguo visited the ruined courtyard. He found the governor's brother guarding the debris. The Vice Premier stepped over the fallen mud bricks to shake the calloused hand of the disabled farmer, promising state support for recovery. A photographer captured this quiet handshake. The brother framed the photograph and hung it on his bedroom wall, where it remained a treasured possession.

Today, the residence stands vacant in Gucheng District, protected since 2011 as a local cultural relic. The weathered wooden columns bear the scars of the 1996 disaster, showing how traditional engineering saved the structure. The silent, empty rooms preserve the memory of two brothers: one who reshaped the economy of Yunnan, and one who quietly tended the ancestral earth amidst the ruins.
