Kunming Zhongwei Horizon Hotel
Kunming, Yunnan, China
In April 1999, shortly before the Kunming International Horticultural Exposition, a 29-story high-rise rose along the Panlong River on Qingnian Road. This was the Yunnan Tianheng Grand Hotel, built with an investment of nearly 700 million RMB. By the end of 2000, it secured its official five-star designation, establishing itself as a commercial landmark in the Wuhua District.
The physical structure of the hotel reflects a deliberate dialogue between international design and local heritage. Inside, the spaces carry the signature of Hirsch Bedner Associates and DDA, who reshaped the interiors during a major 2017 renovation. Visitors walk through spaces defined by calm black and coffee-colored materials, where ordered layers of light and shadow play across walls decorated with the smooth texture of Kunming-style ivory carving art and local landscape paintings.
