Kunming Young Men's Christian Association

In 1912, Dong Ze and Li Quanben returned from their studies in Japan to establish the Kunming Young Men's Christian Association. By late 1931, architect Li Jinpei and engineer Peng Lubing began translating this social vision into brick and timber on Dingxin Street. Backed by a twenty-five thousand dollar donation from the American Foster brothers, the building rose as an L-shaped sanctuary.

At the corner transition stands a five-story octagonal tower, capped by a traditional Chinese pyramidal roof. Its facade bears the golden gleam of carved characters. Step close to the foundation to touch the rough-hewn stone laid in August 1933. Here, Yunnan provincial chairman Long Yun inscribed the association's motto of service onto the foundation stone.

Branching from this tower are two three-story wings. Their exterior windows are framed with cool, smooth stone arches, while the roof relies on the sturdy geometry of Russian-style triangular timber trusses. Inside, the walls merge local and foreign craftsmanship. Builders divided the rooms using traditional Chinese wooden panels alongside European-style sand-plastered wooden laths, which still retain their coarse, gritty texture.

These spaces soon filled with human history. In 1937, musician Li Jiading taught patriotic songs in the classrooms, his voice echoing off the courtyard walls. During the war, the newly arrived pilots of the Flying Tigers slept in the third-floor dormitories. In 1943, student secretaries Li Chuwen and Wu Renlin organized services for the nearby Southwest Associated University, providing study rooms for displaced scholars.

The building's purpose shifted with the decades. In 1953, it housed the Yunnan Daily offices. By late 1958, the municipal housing bureau converted the complex into the Kunming Children's Palace, filling the corridors with the sounds of youth theater and music. Decades of residential use followed, leaving the timber to decay until a twenty million RMB restoration in 2009 secured its columns. Today, the historic courtyard integrates into a bustling commercial district, where visitors drink coffee beneath the same timber trusses that sheltered wartime refugees.
