Kunming Wanshou Tower

In 1714, local farmers led by Li Wenxiu petitioned the Kunming magistrate to establish a market along the Baoxiang River. The magistrate approved, and the bustling Xiaobanqiao market was born. Today, the 1714 "Xiaobanqiao Street Market Stele" stands in the courtyard of the Wanshou Tower, its rough, weathered stone surface recording this triumph of rural commerce.

Wanshou Tower rises over twenty meters above Middle Street in Xiaobanqiao Town. Rebuilt between 1903 and 1907 during the Guangxu era, this south-facing, double-eaved hip-and-gable pavilion rests on a post-and-lintel brick-and-wood frame. Its side and rear walls are packed with dense, cool earth. In front of the entrance stand two stone Huabiao columns, nearly ten meters tall, topped with carved dragons and lions. These are the last surviving ancient Huabiao in Kunming.

During the Daoguang era, Viceroy Lin Zexu climbed this tower. He listened to the rushing waters of the Baoxiang River and looked out over the green fields toward Lake Dian, composing poetry inspired by the bright red camellias of the temple courtyard. Visitors today can stand where Lin stood, looking out toward the distant peaks of the Western Hills.

The building preserves the touch of Qing Dynasty artisans. Below the upper-floor windows, rectangular wood panels display smooth carvings of historical figures, landscapes, and flowers. Three circular wooden plaques bearing the characters "Wanshou Tower" hang from the eaves. The clay sculptures of the Thunder God and the Twenty-Eight Mansions on the lower level have vanished, yet the courtyard remains alive with nature. A fragrant, three-hundred-year-old mountain magnolia and a thick loquat tree shade the stone tablets. Local residents rescued three scattered historical stones, placing them alongside the 1714 market stele to protect their shared heritage.
