Kunming Longshu Nunnery

In 1696, builders in Xiaomaju Village raised the timber frames of Longshu Nunnery, crowning its Heavenly King Hall with rolling-scroll ridges. For centuries, the scent of pine and cypress drifted over stone arch bridges spanning the Puzhao River. Inside the Main Hall, a gilded military deity stood flanked by wooden boards bearing the carved characters for affection and sincerity.

The quiet of this Buddhist courtyard shattered in 1943. The nearby Wujiaba airfield brought the roar of warplanes, shaking the temple's clay roof tiles. The hill directly behind the nunnery became the Kunming Air Force Cemetery. American pilot Robert L. Scott watched coffins descend into the red Yunnan earth, writing that his fellow Flying Tigers viewed the small temple as their church. The nunnery became a temporary repository, housing the heavy wooden coffins of fallen aviators before their burial.

Local villager Hai Qing, born in 1938, watched this landscape transform. He remembered the smoke rising from the cemetery's memorial hall and the day after the war when American remains were exhumed for repatriation. Each empty grave was left marked with a small, wind-whipped American flag. The remaining five hundred Chinese airmen rested there until 1953, when workers exhumed and moved them to Changchun Mountain near Puzhao Village. In later years, local children slipped past the deep boundary ditches to play dominoes with the abandoned wooden spirit tablets in the empty memorial hall.

Today, high-rise developments and factories crowd the borders of Guandu District. The core of Longshu Nunnery remains preserved as a municipal cultural relic. The graves on the hill are gone. The temple stands as a physical anchor to a global conflict. The quiet courtyard, once filled with the low hum of Buddhist prayers and the thunder of fighter engines, preserves the memory of those who crossed oceans to fight in the skies of Yunnan.
