Kunming Longquan Taoist Temple

At the foothills of Wulaofeng on Mount Longquan, a five-courtyard temple rises along the mountain slope. This is the Longquan Taoist Temple, a sanctuary where human history and botanical survival converge. The site began as the Heishui Shrine during the Han Dynasty, where locals prayed for rain. In 1394, Duke Houmu of Xiping funded a major reconstruction. He appointed the priest Xu Ritong to establish a formal temple enshrining Celestial Master Zhang Daoling.

The stones and soil here carry the physical marks of those who sought refuge or spiritual authority. In the early fifteenth century, the exiled Taoist master Liu Yuanran lived within these walls. He trained disciples, established the regional Changchun lineage, and successfully petitioned the imperial court to set up three Taoist administrative offices in Yunnan. Centuries later, the Qing Dynasty scholar Lin Zexu paused at the mountain gate to write the calligraphic couplets that still flank the entrance beneath the "Ziji Xuandu" plaque. During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Chinese scientists set up temporary laboratories in these quiet halls, their instruments humming beneath the wooden eaves. Nearby, local Taoists hid and cared for the wounded Red Army soldier Li Rihui, linking the ancient altar to modern survival.

Visitors walk through a sequence of spaces designed to mirror a spiritual ascent. The journey begins at the mountain gate and climbs past the Thunder God Hall, where the twisted, rough bark of the "Hero Embracing Beauty" cypress stands guard. In the Patriarch Hall, the scent of winter-blooming plum blossoms from a Tang Dynasty tree fills the air. This ancient tree grows alongside a towering Song Dynasty cypress, a Yuan Dynasty Chinese fir, and a Ming Dynasty tea tree. Together, they are known as the four treasures. Further up, the Jade Emperor Hall houses a cold, smooth Ming Dynasty stone stele recording the temple's reconstruction, leading finally to the Three Pure Ones Hall at the summit. Outside, the Guanyu Bridge divides the famous twin ponds. One pool remains crystal clear while the other runs muddy and golden-brown, a physical boundary where the waters never mix, mirroring the quiet balance of the mountain.
