Kunming Longquan Ancient Town Museum

In the northern suburbs of Kunming, the earth bears the physical imprint of a century‘s intellectual migration. Here, the Longquan Ancient Town Museum Cluster occupies a network of twenty-eight preserved historic sites, forming one of Kunming’s three major historical and cultural museum clusters. At Sijiaying 61, a traditional “Yikeyin” (One Stamp) courtyard residence stands with its symmetrical layout of three main rooms and four side wings, its high walls pressing into the soil like a square seal. Under these clay-tiled roofs, scholars Wen Yiduo and Zhu Ziqing lived and worked during the Southwest Associated University years from 1938 to 1946, fleeing wartime bombardment.

A short walk away in Zongpiying, the eighty-square-meter timber home designed and built by architects Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin remains. The scent of aged pine and dry earth lingers in this modest space, where the couple drafted the foundational texts of Chinese architectural history. Nearby, the No. 7 Granary, once a storehouse for grain, became Feng Youlan‘s “spiritual granary” where he wrote his philosophical treatises.

The museum cluster connects these academic sanctuaries with local craft traditions. In the Wamao Museum, nearly four hundred clay roof-tile cats—upgraded to provincial intangible cultural heritage in 2023—stare down from the roof ridges with wide, hollow eyes and gaping mouths. Visitors can touch the gritty, cool surface of raw Yunnan clay in the interactive workshops, feeling the same earth that local potters have shaped for generations. It is a place where the quiet rustle of paper, the smell of damp clay, and the resilience of human thought remain preserved in stone and wood.
