In February 1992, a twenty-three-story concrete tower rose at No. 98 Beijing Road, permanently altering the skyline of Kunming. This was the Kunming Jinjiang Hotel, a joint venture born from a December 1985 agreement between Shanghai and Yunnan. It stood as a physical monument to the regional economic alliance known as Hu-Dian cooperation. By July 1993, the National Tourism Administration awarded the property its four-star rating, placing it among the very first luxury hotels in Yunnan Province.

The engineering of the tower culminated on the twenty-third floor of Tower A. Here, a mechanical gear system rotates a 360-degree revolving restaurant. Guests experience a slow, steady glide, watching the city skyline yield to the distant, shimmering blue of Dianchi Lake. Below this high-altitude dining room, the hotel organizes its space into 320 guest rooms, a 500-square-meter multi-functional hall, and themed dining spaces like the Shanghai Hall and Seasons Hall.

Renovations in 2006, 2015, and 2017 updated the interiors, yet the core hospitality remained anchored in local sensory details. Guests ending their day receive warm bowls of sweet white fungus soup, and depart with the scent of baked rose flower cakes. On August 18, 2022, the hotel celebrated its thirtieth anniversary. Today, the hotel remains a functional landmark, its presence a reminder of the early days of Yunnan's modern opening to the world.
