Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences

In July 1938, near the waters of Kunming's Black Dragon Pool, botanist Hu Xiansu established the Yunnan Provincial Institute of Agricultural and Forestry Botany. This sanctuary of science, now the Kunming Institute of Botany under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, operates under a simple directive: understand the nature of mountains and rivers, and explore the secrets of plants.

The institute's history is written in the physical struggles of its researchers. At age sixty-one, botanist Li Heng walked into the roadless Dulong River valley for a winter expedition, returning with seven thousand dried specimens. Decades later, collector Guo Yongjie fell through a frozen ice sheet at sixty-three hundred meters on Mount Everest. He emerged with his boots freezing rock-hard in the thin air, carrying the seeds of a rare high-altitude mustard. Elsewhere, botanist Zhong Yang spent years traversing the Tibetan plateau, losing thirty pounds to high-altitude sickness while securing forty million seeds for the future.

Today, these treasures reside in the China Southwest Wild Species Germplasm Bank, established in 2007. Inside subterranean vaults chilled to a silent minus twenty degrees Celsius, technicians prepare seeds by crushing dry pods with rubber stoppers. This facility preserves collections for over eleven thousand six hundred wild plant species. Nearby, the herbarium houses over 1.72 million paper-dry pressed specimens, preserving the physical memory of Asian flora.

Outside, the living world thrives. Visitors walking through the Fuli Palace greenhouse complex—named by academician Wu Zhengyi after ancient Han Dynasty gardens—step into the heavy, humid air of a forty-two hundred square meter conservatory. Here, the scent of damp earth and tropical leaves fills the lungs, a direct physical link to the wilderness preserved by generations of scientists who risked their lives to map the green world.
