Kunming Huguo Bridge

In December 1915, military leaders Cai E, Tang Jiyao, and Li Liejun stood in Kunming and declared independence, launching the Huguo Uprising to stop the restoration of imperial rule. To honor this campaign, Yunnan authorities demolished a section of the city wall in January 1919. By December of that year, they completed a double-arch stone bridge across the ancient moat.

Stonemasons bound the heavy blocks using a traditional mortar of lime, sand, red clay, and sticky rice syrup. They carved nine dragon heads on the south side of the arches and nine elephant heads on the north, symbolizing auspiciousness. On the bridge's flanks, they installed purple, European-style hollow cast-iron flower railings standing 1.2 meters high. On each arch, they chiseled an inscription: "Built in the first month of summer, the eighth year of the Republic."

For decades, the bridge carried the weight of a changing city. In 1952, municipal workers filled the ancient moat and buried the entire structure under asphalt to build Dongfeng Road. The bridge vanished from sight, remaining silent and dark beneath the streets.

In April 1996, the buried monument reemerged. Workers excavating a water pipe struck solid stone deep underground. Their tools scraped against the forgotten arches, revealing the carved characters from 1919. This accidental discovery prompted a major restoration project between November 1999 and April 2000.

Today, the bridge stands at the intersection of Huguo Road and Dongfeng East Road in Wuhua District, the upper deck still carries daily vehicular traffic. Below, a rectangular sunken plaza measuring 32.5 by 23 meters allows pedestrians to walk through the dry stone arches. Visitors descend twenty-nine stone steps to touch the rough, restored masonry.
