In January 1988, a seventeen-story tower with a purplish-red facade opened on Kunming's Beijing Road, instantly becoming the tallest landmark on the corridor. This was the Golden Dragon Hotel, Yunnan's first Sino-foreign joint venture and its first four-star hotel.

Inside, the hotel was a sensory marvel. Visitors stepped from the bustling street into a grand lobby cooled by the splash of an indoor fountain and illuminated by a massive crystal chandelier. Overhead, the atrium skylight used white, light curtains to filter the fierce Yunnan sun, casting a soft, diffuse glow across the marble floors. The building housed 290 rooms and ten restaurants serving Cantonese and Western cuisine, generating a peak monthly profit of three million RMB in 1992.

Time eventually caught up with the structure. Aging facilities, a paralyzed drainage system, and cracks from nearby subway construction forced the hotel to close on June 15, 2014. For eleven years, the building stood silent and vacant. Its owners, the Shenzhen Haiya Group, planned a 3.8 billion RMB demolition to erect a 98-story, 428-meter skyscraper.

In early 2026, the local government approved a plan to abandon the demolition. The developers preserved the purplish-red concrete shell, choosing a careful retrofitting process. Through this in-situ renovation, the building is transforming into a voco hotel under the InterContinental Hotels Group. The original structure remains standing, a monument to Yunnan's opening to the world, waiting for a new generation of travelers to walk through its doors.
