Kunming Baozhu Monastery

In 1321, builders established the Baozhu Monastery halfway up the slopes of Baozhushan in Kunming. Over seven centuries, the temple survived fires and political shifts through the hands of those who cared for it. When fire damaged the structures in the sixteenth century, local villagers pooled their money to repair the halls in 1612. In 1621, a Kunming native named Fu Zonglong wrote an epigraph to mark a major reconstruction. Seventeen years later, in 1638, the geographer Xu Xiake climbed the mountain and noted the temple's eastward orientation in his travel diary. In 1694, the Governor-General Wang Jiwen funded another restoration, leaving a stone stela that remains part of the site's physical record.

Visitors today enter through a south-facing, three-arched mountain gate. On the open platform, a screen wall inscribed with "Sanskrit Sound Ocean Tide" stands opposite a nine-story, hexagonal white glazed pagoda. Beyond this, the Heavenly King Hall houses clay statues of the Thousand-Hand Guanyin and the Four Heavenly Kings. Stone steps lead past an embedded tablet of the Maitreya Buddha to an upper courtyard. Here, an octagonal release pond filled with frogs and turtles sits before the Main Hall. Inside, statues of the Three Lives Buddhas stand alongside the disciples Kassapa and Ananda, while the side wings house the Bodhisattvas Guanyin, Manjusrī, Samantabhadra, and Ksitigarbha.

The physical environment of the monastery has changed with the climate. On the west side, a three-tiered cliff once channeled the Baozhu Waterfall, which historical accounts describe as splashing like rolling pearls. Today, the waterfall is dry, leaving a silent stone face. The mountain forest remains quiet. At seven in the morning, the deep resonance of the temple bell echoes through the rising mist. Visitors can sit under old trees, drink bitter cloud-mist tea brewed with mountain spring water, and touch the smooth, polished stone steps worn down by centuries of footsteps.
