Kaiyuan Fenghuang Tower

On the summit of Phoenix Mountain, the Kaiyuan Phoenix Tower rises 84.15 meters into the Yunnan sky. Its off-white Gothic spire and vintage clock faces mirror London's Big Ben, and its foundations rest on a uniquely local transformation. Before construction began in August 2016, this ridge was a scarred landscape of industrial quarries, garbage heaps, and polluted wastewater ponds. By November 2017, workers had reshaped the wasteland into a 3,500-mu ecological park, planting 146,000 trees to heal the earth.

The tower stands as a monument to this transition. Visitors walking up the south-facing sunken staircase pass seasonal flower beds, smelling the fresh blossoms that replaced the sulfurous air of the old industrial zone. Inside, the first three floors house the 2,400-square-meter Kaiyuan Memory Living Room. On the first floor, the cool, quiet gallery displays the fossilized teeth of Lufengpithecus from Xiaolongtan, tracing human presence back millions of years. Nearby exhibits honor the laborers who laid the narrow tracks of the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway, their sweat and effort carved into the region's memory. On the second floor, the exhibits shift to the mid-twentieth century. Here, the stories of seventeen Soviet experts who arrived in 1955 to build the local steam power plant come alive through historical replicas and mechanical installations. The third floor preserves the revolutionary history of local communist fighters.

Outside, the tower's exterior continues to engage the senses. At night, an extensive LED system illuminates the off-white facade. The structure casts a long, golden silhouette across the dark, purified waters of Phoenix Lake, where white egrets now nest. The steady, silent movement of the four great clock faces marks the passage of time over a city that successfully traded its gray industrial past for a green, living future.
