Jiujiang Hongguang Wharf
Jiujiang, Jiangxi, China
Stand before the Jiujiang Hongguang Wharf, and you are looking at the modern anchor of Jiangxi Province’s waterway trade. Positioned on the downstream currents of the Yangtze River in Pengze County, this facility serves as the primary mother port for the region's freight. The first phase of the complex commands 572 meters of deep-water shoreline, extending 638 meters inland to form a massive logistical hub. Four 5,000-ton container berths line the water, capable of handling 650,000 standard containers each year. The architecture reflects a precise industrial logic. A continuous 572-meter terminal platform connects to the mainland via three approach bridges, creating a seamless flow for heavy cargo.
The construction of this massive port required a careful balancing act between industrial expansion and environmental preservation. Builders implemented strict ecological measures, greening exposed slopes and carefully managing excavated mud to protect the Yangtze’s waters. This approach aligned with a regional initiative to maintain the river's natural beauty while establishing a high-capacity commercial center.
The wharf operates as a National Class I port, featuring a fully integrated customs clearance system. Border inspection, maritime authorities, and customs officials work together on-site, separated into distinct domestic and foreign trade zones to streamline operations. This efficiency supports a multi-modal transportation network, linking river barges to rail lines and highways.
The story of the wharf is one of rapid, deliberate expansion. Groundbreaking took place in November 2017, and by October 2020, the port was officially open for business. The facility reached a major milestone in December 2025 when the Belize-flagged freighter Xiyuan cleared customs and sailed directly for South Korea. This voyage marked the beginning of normalized international operations, transforming the wharf into a direct bridge between inland China and global markets. As you examine the details of the exhibit, consider how this concrete and steel structure reshapes the economic geography of the Yangtze River Economic Belt.
