Jingzhou Shashi Workers' Gymnasium
Jingzhou, Hubei, China
At No. 16 Wenhua Gong Road, the Shashi Workers’ Cultural Palace has stood since 1961. Within this civic campus, the Shashi Workers’ Gymnasium occupies 4,413.07 square meters of space, managed by the Jingzhou General Trade Union. This structure has absorbed the collective energy of a changing city for decades.
Step inside the indoor basketball hall, where the scent of floor wax and the sharp squeak of rubber soles on professional courts evoke decades of athletic struggle. On May 1, 1988, the air grew thick with the scent of tanning oil as muscular competitors flexed under bright lights during a highly publicized national bodybuilding competition. Five years later, on November 26, 1993, the cavernous space transformed. Today, the facility connects directly to modern leisure, with the humid, warm air of a constant-temperature swimming pavilion, completed in August 2023, drifting from next door.
