Jianyang Inn
Dali, Yunnan, China
Jianyang Inn stands on Wenxian Street, immediately adjacent to the landmark Jianyang Tower in the core of Jianchuan Ancient City. This settlement preserves over 1,300 years of history. The inn, established in 2015 within a protected national historical city, represents a model for the adaptive reuse of historic Bai residences. It sits near the West Street Ancient Building Complex, the National Chronicle Museum Silk Road Branch, and the historical residences of Zhao Fan and Zhou Zhongyue.
The structure comprises four traditional Bai ethnic 'Three Rooms and a Screen Wall' courtyard layouts. Sweeping eaves and gray-green roof tiles define its exterior, while interlocking wooden bracket sets utilize traditional mortise-and-tenon joints to secure the timber frame. Underfoot, smooth river cobblestones pave the central courtyards, which are decorated with native potted flora.
Human artistry defines the interior. Local craftsmen from Jianchuan, celebrated as the 'Home of Woodcarving,' carved the openwork window grilles and structural beams. These carvings depict natural motifs of mountains, water, birds, and flowers. A masterfully carved wooden screen wall stands in the central courtyard. Guests touch these hand-chiseled grooves, feeling the physical labor of the artisans.
The inn balances heritage with modern comfort. The rooms, ranging from twenty-square-meter double rooms to sixty-square-meter suites, feature underfloor heating and contemporary en-suite bathrooms. In the morning, the scent of sweet osmanthus drifts from the courtyard through the open windows.
Living traditions animate the space. The inn hosts the traditional Bai 'Feiyan' tea ceremony, where hosts brew bitter, salty, and sweet teas for guests. Visitors try on traditional Bai rabbit-ear hats and learn the regional Bajiaobian dance, shaking bamboo sticks filled with coins. Through these sensory encounters, the inn functions as a living museum, preserving the material culture and daily rhythms of the Bai people.
