Jianshui Town God's Temple

In the heart of Jianshui, the Town God's Temple stands as a physical record of shifting beliefs and daily life. Established during the Ming dynasty's Jiajing era, the site began as an ancestral shrine for Yang Tingxiang, a provincial administration commissioner. Over the centuries, the community transformed it. Builders repaired the wooden frames during the Kangxi era and reconstructed them in 1792. By the late Qing dynasty, the temple grounds merged with local commerce. Nearby, a baker named Mr. Wu operated the Rongxiangzhai pastry shop. After attending a banquet hosted by the scholar Zhu Weiqing, Wu created a delicate, sweet pastry called Yanwosu, or bird's nest pastry, filling the surrounding air with the scent of toasted sugar and lard.

Visitors enter by crossing the Shousi Bridge, where they can run their fingers over the cool stone balustrades carved with the twelve Chinese zodiac animals. Inside, the courtyard reveals an earth-and-wood structure. The surviving Middle Hall, wing halls, ear rooms, and Wuchang Hall showcase the cleverness of local carpenters. The roof features a specialized design, joining a hip roof with a roll-gland roof. This arrangement requires a complex internal timber system to channel rainwater through hidden wooden troughs during summer downpours. Below, the bases of the gold pillars feature small, smooth relief carvings of lions, worn down by centuries of touch.

The twentieth century brought secular changes. During the 1970s and 1980s, the county government used the complex for its First Guesthouse. Later, the Chaoyang Hotel integrated the temple into its layout, using the Ming-era Middle Hall as its active reception lobby. In 2019, Yunnan Province designated the temple as a Major Provincial Historical and Cultural Site.
