In 1716, Magistrate Chen Zhaoqui established a county school on Yinghui Road in Jianshui, then known as Lin'an. This institution, the Huanwen Academy, helped secure the region's reputation for scholarship, contributing to the famous local phenomenon where Lin'an candidates claimed half of Yunnan Province's successful imperial examination passes.

War during the Xianfeng era reduced the original timber structures to ash. In 1897, local builders raised the academy once more, carving new mortise-and-tenon joints to support a grand three-courtyard layout spanning 7,920 square meters. When the imperial examinations ended, the halls found a new purpose. Generations of children filled the rooms, which became Jianshui County Second Elementary School in 1951. The last principal of the Republican era, who also served as the first principal under the People's Republic, managed this transition. His grandson, Zeng Li, grew up listening to the playground echoes.

By 2015, the school merged with another institution and relocated, leaving the historic complex silent. Dust settled on the wood-frame structures. In 2019, Zeng Li returned with a team of local craftsmen to begin a five-year, privately funded restoration. They worked with traditional tools, reviving the symmetrical central axis. They reconstructed the pair of mountain gates, repaired the ritual gate, the central lecture hall, the library tower, and fifty study chambers.

Today, visitors walk past manicured pines and cypresses, smelling the sharp scent of fresh wood and pine needles. Cool water ripples in stone-lined ponds, reflecting the grey-tiled roofs under the Yunnan sun. Inside the library tower, scholars carefully align woodblock-printed pages of ancient texts. The academy serves as a public cultural center and a heritage inn called Su Yuan She. The sound of children reciting poetry once again mixes with the scratch of calligraphy brushes on paper, continuing a three-hundred-year-old conversation with the past.
