Jianshui Huanglong Monastery

At the foothills of Shaohe Mountain in Yunnan, Jianshui Huanglong Monastery stands against the forested slopes of Xizhuang Town. Its origins reach back eight centuries to the Dali State of the Song Dynasty, though its oldest standing timber frames date to the Ming Dynasty. Below the temple, the clear waters of Huanglong Pond flow year-round, maintaining a constant temperature of seven to eight degrees Celsius. This spring-fed pool, surrounded by ancient climbing vines, provides drinking water to the nearby villages of Machang and Tuanshan.

The architecture climbs the mountain slope in a series of terraced halls. Visitors pass through the Mountain Gate to reach the Jade Emperor Hall, the Thousand-Hand Guanyin Hall, the Wenchang Hall, and the Three Sages Hall. At the heart of the complex is the Main Hall, a timber-frame structure measuring thirteen meters wide and ten and a half meters deep. It features a traditional post-and-beam system topped with a single-eave gable-and-hip roof. The masonry beneath contains a physical record of the past, where Ming and Qing dynasty bricks bear the distinct chisel marks and patterns of early stonemasons.

By the early twenty-first century, many of these historic halls had collapsed. In 2004, Abbot Shi Chizhong, a former entrepreneur who had traded his business career for monastic robes, began a major restoration. Using archival photographs, he spent forty million RMB over three years to rebuild the ruined structures.

The monastery became the center of national attention in 2014. To finance a massive expansion, the abbot attempted to auction three treasured prayer beads. The situation grew tense in November of that year when thieves broke into the temple, stealing the beads and a historic bronze vessel.

Today, the monastery is protected as a Yunnan Provincial Cultural Relic. The state manages its preservation, focusing on structural reinforcement and termite control. The quiet of the mountain has returned, punctuated by the drip of cold spring water and the wind rustling through the ancient trees.
