Jianchuan Yang Family Courtyard

In March 1639, the geographer Xu Xiake walked into Jianchuan and dropped his heavy luggage at the home of the scholar Yang Gongsheng on North Gate Street. He stayed for three days, exploring Jinhua Mountain and Shiboshan under his host's guidance. Today, that very shelter—built in 1582 during the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty—remains standing. It is one of twenty-one surviving Ming courtyards in the historic core of the town, preserved through centuries of quiet domestic life.

The house has survived great hazards. In 1949, a fire swept through the street, consuming the outer gate tower and the front shops. The family rebuilt those peripheral structures with brick and tile, shielding the core timber building that stood firm against the heat. Today, Yang's descendants, including Yang Deshou, still live in these rooms, sleeping near the same walls that sheltered the famous traveler.

The heart of the courtyard is a two-story, five-bay timber building. Builders raised it using a traditional post-and-tie timber frame, capping the structure with a heavy, multi-eaved gable and hip roof. The woodcarving represents the height of local craftsmanship. Under the eaves, dragon-carved beam heads stare down with wide, bulging eyes and flowing whiskers carved directly into the ancient pine. Light filters into the rooms through original plum-blossom-shaped wooden windows, casting geometric shadows across the floorboards. The original lattice doors still creak on their wooden hinges, worn smooth by generations of hands.

On the main entrance doors, a couplet composed by the Republican-era government secretary Chen Shouchi honors the home's history. The ink characters recall the visit of "Hongzu," Xu Xiake's alias, alongside the grand five-bay layout of the hall. By his bedside, Yang Deshou keeps two worn, paper-covered volumes of Xu's travel diaries. Visitors who cross the threshold step into a continuous household chronicle, where the scent of aged timber and the daily routine of the Yang family bridge the gap between the Ming Dynasty and the present day.
