Jianchuan Woodcarving Museum

On the third floor of the Huayi Shopping Center at No. 69 Dianzang South Road, the Jianchuan Huayi Woodcarving Museum preserves a craft born during the Tang Dynasty. This national-level intangible cultural heritage, recognized in 2011, comes alive across three permanent galleries: the Scroll Gallery, the Treasure Gallery, and the Furniture Gallery.

Inside, the air carries the faint, dry scent of aged red wood and yellow wood. Visitors encounter the physical marks of human labor. You can trace the deep ridges left by steel chisels on the round screen featuring a young dragon motif, where the warm timber meets the cool, smooth surface of natural Dali marble. Nearby, a square openwork screen uses key patterns and interlocking foliage to frame natural stone veins that resemble misty mountains.

The human presence is everywhere. It is visible in the calluses of veteran carvers who spent eighteen years shaping the museum's masterpiece: the 117-meter-long woodcarving scroll of Zhang Shengwen's Buddhist Painting. It is present in the five-panel mural of the Medicine Buddha Assembly, where carvers used openwork and relief techniques to coax over 700 distinct figures, pavilions, and auspicious beasts out of flat timber. It lives in the heavy, imposing frames of the Qing-style Taishi chairs, and in the modern sketches of young designers who adapt these ancient patterns into contemporary home goods.

Historically, this craftsmanship traveled far beyond Jianchuan County. Local artisans shaped the stone-inlaid furniture in the Yunnan Hall of the Great Hall of the People, decorated the partition screens of Beijing's Palace Museum, and carved the doors of Shaxi Ancient Town. Today, the museum serves as a research platform and a public classroom. It connects the ancient forests of Yunnan with the modern world, showing how a single piece of wood, guided by a steady hand, can hold the history of a thousand years.
