Jianchuan Town God's Temple

On Aofeng Hill, at the southern edge of the Shaxi Basin, a boundary of ancient cypress trees marks a sanctuary of clay, wood, and collective memory. Built in 1890 during the Guangxu Reign, the Jianchuan Town God's Temple rose from the shared savings of eighteen local Bai villages. A local female shaman named Ji Zhangmu donated her own earnings and gathered donations so her neighbors could worship without traveling for days to the county seat.

To enter, you must walk directly beneath a theatrical stage. This architectural threshold leads to an inner courtyard where the stage faces the main hall. Here, the wooden statue of the main deity, the Imperial Bestowed Ancient Town God Jingdi, was historically carried out to watch theatrical performances meant to entertain the gods. To the north, a side hall honors Lu Ban, the patron of carpenters, while the southern hall belongs to the Dragon King.

Outside, the monumental screen wall stands sixteen point six meters wide and nine point eight meters high. Built in 1930 by master mason Li Wenxiu and his family, its thick rammed earth has survived decades of seismic tremors. Its surface, coated in lime mixed with sticky rice flour and cowhide ash, bears the four calligraphic characters meaning "Forever Guarding the Mountains and Rivers." A local student copied these characters from the famous Dali Three Pagodas.

The temple's twentieth-century history remains visible in its fabric. In the 1950s, the state converted the halls into high-standard grain storehouses. During the early 2000s, architect Huang Yinwu led a Swiss-supported rehabilitation project. He chose to preserve the smooth wooden lining boards and white paint from the granary era, leaving a physical record of the building's agricultural service.

Today, the complex houses the Tea Horse Road Museum. On the fifth day of the third lunar month, the annual temple fair fills the courtyard once more. The scent of incense, the rustle of paper flowers, and the echo of Bai songs bridge the gap between the temple's sacred origins and its modern life as a community center.
