Jianchuan Jingfeng Pavilion

At the edge of Jianchuan Ancient City, where Jinhua Mountain meets the Yongfeng River, stands a sanctuary of wood and stone. Built in 1673 during the Kangxi reign, the central Jingfeng Pavilion began as a Tibetan Buddhist prayer-wheel house. In the mid-Qing Dynasty, local builders transformed it into a shrine for Kuixing, the god of examinations. By 1912, the scholar Zhao Fan renamed it to honor the legacy of past sages, hanging a hand-written couplet inside that urges visitors to stand at the highest point of virtue.

The architecture reveals the physical labor of the Bai people. Inside the three-story octagonal pavilion, four massive central pillars bear the weight of the triple-eaved roof. The timber frame creaks softly under the mountain wind, its interlocking bracket sets radiating in eight directions toward a gleaming copper treasure bottle at the peak. On the ground floor, visitors can touch the three-layer hollowed-out wood carvings on the lattice doors. These panels, salvaged from the nineteenth-century mansion of the Dali leader Du Wenxiu, depict phoenixes piercing peonies and magpies resting on plum blossoms.

To the southeast, the fifteen-meter-tall Lingbao Pagoda rises in nine tiers of dense-eaved stone. Originally built to control seasonal floods, it collapsed during a massive earthquake in 1751. When workers rebuilt it in 1782, the Bai artisan Zhao Zhengmin spent months carving its limestone surfaces. His chisel left behind the raised figures of the Four Heavenly Kings, the Four Vajras, and sixteen arhats, their stone faces smoothed by centuries of rain.

Nearby, the double-eaved timber archway of the Lingxing Gate marks the entrance to the Confucian temple. Beneath this very wooden gate, on April 2, 1949, young underground revolutionaries gathered in the pre-dawn chill to launch an armed uprising, firing the first shots of the region's revolution. Today, the scent of aged pine and incense drifts through the quiet courtyard, linking the quiet devotion of Qing scholars, the sweat of Bai stone-carvers, and the footsteps of modern visitors.
