Hunan Xiangjiang New Area Planning Exhibition Hall
Changsha, Hunan, China
At No. 383 Xiaoxiang South Avenue, the Hunan Xiangjiang New Area Planning Exhibition Hall stands as a physical bridge between Changsha’s deep past and its engineered future. Designed by architect Wei Chunyu's Regional Studio and completed in 2009, the 7,000-square-meter structure anchors the eastern edge of Yanghu Wetland Park.
Inside, the faint, earthy scent of natural Taohuajiang bamboo grounds the space. Craftsmen pressed these flat bamboo boards to line the expansive interior, a deliberate nod to Hunan’s cultural heritage. Years after installation, the wood remains perfectly smooth, resisting the humid air of the nearby Xiangjiang River without a single crack or trace of mold.
The ground floor maps the region's recent economic and infrastructural milestones. Ascending to the second floor, visitors encounter a massive, animated sand table. Glowing lights trace the spatial layout of emerging districts like Meixi Lake International New City and the Dawangshan Tourist Resort. The cool light of 21.6-inch square LCD splicing screens illuminates the faces of onlookers, translating abstract urban policies into visible streetscapes.
On the third floor, a 4D cinema hums with the 'Dream of Changsha,' projecting the city's future. This building frequently shifts its identity to house ancient history. Curators have carefully positioned the delicate 'Plain Unlined Gauze Gown' from the Mawangdui Han Tomb within these modern walls. The space has also hosted 183 pieces of Ming Dynasty royal porcelain from Jingdezhen and centuries-old European glass art from Prague.
Operating under the theme 'Surging Xiangjiang River to the Future,' the hall forms a cohesive cultural living room alongside the neighboring Xie Zilong Photography Museum and Li Zijian Art Museum. By the end of 2015, the footsteps of nearly a million citizens, foreign dignitaries, and business leaders had polished its floors. The exhibition hall captures the exact moment a city decides what it will become.
