Hunan University Gymnasium
Changsha, Hunan, China
In 1992, Hunan University possessed only a simple, wind-swept open-air sports field. Senior alumnus Huang Zengpu and the alumni association launched a global fundraising campaign, collecting over 300,000 RMB to build a proper indoor arena. Architects Wu Jiguang, Chen Xiaoming, and He Shaoyao translated these collective hopes into blueprints. Completed in September 1998, the Hunan University Gymnasium stands at No. 2 Lushan South Road, anchored between the flowing waters of the Xiang River and the green slopes of Mount Yuelu.
The building occupies a footprint of 3,260 square meters and spans a total floor area of 8,840 square meters. Inside, the main arena holds 2,760 spectators, who sit on a mix of 1,755 fixed and 995 mobile seats. The air inside carries the sharp, rhythmic ping of celluloid balls from the 18-table table tennis room and the squeak of rubber soles on the standard basketball court.
This structure has absorbed decades of human energy. In July 2011, basketball star Kobe Bryant drew crowds to this court. In May 2014, the eighty-eight-year-old Zen Master Hsing Yun delivered a lecture to nearly 3,000 listeners under these rafters. The arena has hosted the 2005 National Intercity Games, the 2012 home games of the Hunan Polining Basketball Club, and the 2013 National Undergraduate Structural Design Competition.
The physical structure requires constant care to preserve its legacy. In 2024, workers from the Hunan Lianzhong Construction Group climbed into the rafters for a forty-five-day restoration. They scraped rust from the steel roof trusses and laid down new waterproof materials to shield the courts below from Changsha's heavy rains. Today, through an online booking system, students and locals reserve the eight indoor badminton courts and volleyball spaces. The Ministry of Construction recognized this thoughtful integration of form and community with the Third Prize for Outstanding Educational Building Design, cementing the gymnasium as a monument of shared purpose.
