Huizhou West Lake One City
Huizhou, Guangdong, China
Commuters arriving via the Guangzhou-Huizhou Intercity Railway step directly into the subterranean foundation of Huizhou West Lake One City. From this transit hub, four underground floors rise to meet six above-ground levels, forming a 139,000-square-meter structure at the intersection of Huancheng West Road and Tangwei Street.
The central atrium curves in the shape of a traditional Hakka walled village, ringed with wooden borders that catch the natural light flooding through a massive glass skylight. On the fourth-floor observation deck, known as the West Lake Viewpoint, visitors encounter the sweeping profiles of Lingnan Wok-ear houses. Masons used traditional techniques to assemble these structures from heavy blue bricks, stone pillars, and stone slabs, finishing the exterior walls with painted bird and flower motifs. Above them, the third through sixth floors feature overlapping rooflines and exposed beams, recreating the dense physical rhythm of ancient settlement streets.
Large floor-to-ceiling glass walls wrap the exterior, reflecting the waters of the adjacent West Lake. The building stands as a carefully curated intersection of eras, holding space for modern commerce while preserving the tactile memory of Guangdong's architectural heritage.
