Huizhou Liri Life Plaza
Huizhou, Guangdong, China
Positioned between the calm waters of Huizhou West Lake and the winding currents of the Dongjiang River, the Liri Lakeside Life Plaza stands as a physical record of the city’s commercial evolution. When it opened in May 2002, the ten-story complex introduced a new scale of retail architecture to Guangdong Province.
Visitors approaching the building today encounter a structure that bridges early-2000s ambition with contemporary community life. Inside, the spatial design commands immediate attention. A grand central atrium forms the core of the building, rising thirty-five meters and connecting seven floors through a continuous vertical sweep of over 400 square meters. This architectural void draws the eye upward, organizing the surrounding retail spaces while flooding the interior with a sense of openness. Over the past two decades, the building has adapted to shifting cultural currents. Originally conceived as a traditional department store, it transitioned into an experiential lifestyle center. The retail floors now accommodate a diverse ecosystem of supermarkets, brand boutiques, and scenic restaurants that frame views of the adjacent lake.
Beyond commerce, the plaza functions as a civic gathering space. The expansive floors and public areas regularly host Hanfu cultural exhibitions, charity sales, and evening markets. By observing the flow of people through its grand atrium and out toward the lakeside promenades, visitors can read the story of a building that grew alongside its city, transforming from a straightforward shopping destination into a central stage for Huizhou’s daily public life.
