Huizhou Children's Library
Huizhou, Guangdong, China
In the open courtyard of No. 2 Zhongshan Park, a weathered stone monument bears the inscription "Huizhou Private Fenghu Library." This carved marker anchors a site where readers have gathered since 1931. The original builders poured reinforced concrete to create a sanctuary for knowledge, serving as the main city library for over four decades. During the 2008 renovations, work crews transformed the historic exterior, applying thick coats of pink and yellow paint to signal a new era for younger patrons.
The 1,540-square-meter structure holds three distinct layers of discovery. On the ground floor, toddlers flip through pages in a dedicated reading room. Upstairs, elementary and junior high students occupy separate spaces, surrounded by a collection of 30,000 children's books and 80,000 comprehensive volumes. The third floor houses the quiet labor of the acquisition room and a lecture hall.
The building breathes with modern adaptations. Since 2015, the mechanical hum of self-service sterilizers has cleansed pages handled by countless young fingers. In 2020, technicians installed audio "space capsules," creating acoustic cocoons where children listen to stories while holding physical texts. Infants receive their first literary exposure through the "Baby Reading" program, their small hands grasping curated book packages.
A unified barcode system links this historic site to the main Ciyun Library, allowing seamless borrowing across the city. The Huizhou Children's Library bridges eras. The 1931 foundation supports 3D e-books and animated reading materials. The bright facade guards nearly a century of continuous learning.
