In 1945, during the thirty-fourth year of the Republic of China, builders in Huize raised the soil-and-timber frame of the Tang Family Residence. Constructed for Tang Tan, a Kuomintang chemical regiment commander and nephew of the Yunnan leader Tang Jiyao, the home stands at No. 14, Sandao Alley, within Gucheng Street's Fengle Community. Covering 830 square meters, the residence sits south and faces north, shielding its inner life from the mountain winds.

The architecture employs a traditional chuantou-style frame beneath a heavy, weathered hard-mountain roof. Within this boundary, the builders established a classic three-entry courtyard layout. They constructed a closed system of four courtyards and five patios, linked by a corridor loft pattern where footsteps once echoed along elevated wooden planks. Visitors passing through the gatehouse enter a sequence of spaces: the front hall, the east and west wing rooms, and the quiet east and west study rooms. The main hall measures exactly three rooms wide. On the upper floors of the east and west embroidery buildings, hand-carved wooden railings overlook the stone-paved patios below, where rain once collected in cool, damp pools.

For decades, the residence weathered the elements, its timbers absorbing the high-altitude air of Yunnan. On December 14, 2011, the Huize County Government designated the property as a county-level key cultural relics protection unit. In 2022, local authorities and a private enterprise began a meticulous restoration. Guided by the philosophy of repairing the old to look old, carpenters and masons preserved the original clay walls and timber joints, keeping the physical memory of the structure intact.

Today, the residence operates as the Yunshang Jiangnan Inn. The restoration converted the historic spaces into thirteen loft duplex guest suites. Modern living amenities now sit within the original structural frame, allowing guests to sleep beneath the same timber beams that sheltered Tang Tan's household. The building remains a living record of Huize's architectural history, where the scent of old wood meets the quiet comfort of the present.
