Huize Huoshen Temple

In 1757, the people of Huize built a shrine to honor their magistrate, Yi Ning, for his work in education and flood control. Yi Ning redirected this gratitude, converting the building into the Jinzhong Academy and donating ten mu of land to fund it. Fire, however, repeatedly swept through the wooden halls. In 1789, the community rebuilt the ruined academy as the Fire God Temple, dedicating it to Zhurong, the mythical ruler of flame.

This transition from school to temple mirrored the dangerous, high-heat world of Huize’s copper boom. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Huize was a center for mining, metallurgy, and coin casting. The lutou—the master smelting furnace heads of Dongchuan—pooled their wealth to establish this guild temple. Blacksmiths and copper-casters worked daily with molten metal, facing constant danger from runaway heat. They sought protection from Zhurong to keep their furnaces stable and their livelihoods secure.

The temple stands at No. 483 Zhongping Road as part of a provincial-level protected complex alongside the Great Buddha Temple and the Niu Family Ancestral Hall. The surviving structure covers over 800 square meters, organized into two courtyards, two main halls, and two side wings. Visitors enter the front hall, a post-and-tie timber structure with a gable-and-hip roof, where the civil and martial Wealth Gods reside. Further inside, the back hall rises with three layers of wooden bracket sets under the eaves and decorative brick carvings on the walls. Here, the image of Zhurong watches over the space.

The physical details of the temple evoke the sensory world of the historic copper trade. The heavy timber posts show the wear of centuries of soot. The brick carvings on the back hall walls remain cool to the touch, contrasting with the memory of the roaring furnaces that funded them. On the donation box, the carved characters "She Yi De Wan"—meaning "give one, gain ten thousand"—remind visitors of the merchants' prayers for prosperity. Every Lunar New Year, the scent of incense fills the courtyards as residents continue a centuries-old tradition of seeking safety and fortune from the forces of fire and wealth.
