Gejiu City Ground Cable Car

In the mountain-ringed city of Gejiu, Yunnan, a red steel carriage with a blue-green canopy rests on a steep hillside at No. 28 Shuisheng Street. This is the Gejiu City Ground Cable Car, engineered under the direction of Yang Yong from the Kunming Nonferrous Metallurgy Design and Research Institute. Built between 2000 and 2002 to serve the Lühai Xiaoqu residential community, this reciprocating funicular railway climbs a rugged slope exceeding 30 degrees.

The journey spans exactly 247 meters. Passengers step past a simple four-sided ticket booth, drop a one-yuan coin into an iron plate box with a metallic clink, and settle onto traditional woven bamboo seats. The rough texture of the bamboo offers a tactile connection to the region's domestic crafts. As the cable car creaks to life, the single-track system utilizes a central fish-belly passing loop, allowing two counter-balanced carriages to glide past each other in opposite directions.

The ride lasts three minutes and forty seconds. The carriage plunges into a brief, cool tunnel passage where the damp mountain air brushes against the passengers' faces. Emerging from the darkness, the view opens to reveal the urban valley, the peaks of Lao Yang Mountain, and the shimmering waters of Jin Lake.

Gejiu was once celebrated as the global Tin Capital, a bustling industrial hub connected to the world by the historic 600-millimeter Gebishi narrow-gauge railway. The old steam trains have stopped. This community funicular continues its daily run from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. It remains a living piece of transit history. Local commuters and visitors sit side-by-side, holding retro handrails as the machinery hums, suspended between the industrial legacy of the twentieth century and the quiet rhythm of modern mountain life.
