Ganzhou Standard Bell Tower
Ganzhou, Jiangxi, China
On May 1, 1953, the citizens of Ganzhou looked up at a new horizon. Standing twenty meters tall at the busy junction of Yangming, Jiefang, and Heping roads, the newly completed Standard Bell Tower was the tallest structure in the city. Builders had spent the previous year pouring the reinforced concrete frame and laying the red bricks to erect this six-story landmark, celebrating the founding of the People's Republic of China and commemorating the liberation of Ganzhou.
The six-story structure consists of a lower base and an upper watchtower, crowned with an ornamental peak and a lightning rod. For over twenty years, this Soviet-influenced tower dictated the daily rhythm of the urban center. On its fourth floor, four large circular clocks faced the cardinal directions, sending a clear, metallic chime through the surrounding Qilou arcade streets. This sound served as a shared temporal anchor, a signal for workers to return home and families to gather at dusk.
Today, the tower has found a new purpose. In July 2025, the surrounding streets transformed into the Yangming Road Standard Bell Night Market. Under the warm glow of evening lights, the scent of local Ganzhou snacks drifts past the historic red bricks. Visitors sit at the nearby three-thousand-square-meter Standard Bell Tea House, drinking tea and sharing stories while the restored clocks mark the passing hours. The tower stands in the middle of the road, a quiet sentinel watching over the modern city.
