Former Site of Kaiyuan French Hospital

In 1911, French engineers completed the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway, bringing steam engines and coal smoke to Kaiyuan. Beside the tracks, they built Hongren Hospital, a facility known locally as the French Hospital. This medical outpost served railway staff and local elites, while French doctors trained apprentices from Yunnan and Vietnam in Western medicine.

Today, the site at No. 48 Caiyun Road holds the remnants of this colonial medical hub. The two-story Outpatient Department, known as Railway Building No. 205, faces south to catch the Yunnan sun. Its original wooden doors and window frames remain intact. After 1949, the state repurposed these clinical rooms into housing. Young railway workers moved in, hanging laundry where doctors once bandaged wounds, transforming sterile wards into warm, crowded family homes. Nearby, the Inpatient Department, Building No. 207, underwent its own quiet transition, housing families before becoming an equipment storage space in the 1990s. Further north, the Director’s Office at Building No. 208 watched over the grounds.

The most imposing structure is the old water tower, built in 1910. Rising twenty meters, this cast-concrete cylinder supplied the steam locomotives of the Kaiyuan Railway Station. Its circular tank, seven meters in diameter, held sixty cubic meters of water. The tower stood as a monument of industrial utility until its decommissioning in 1991, when a newer, thirty-two-meter tower replaced it. Workers then filled the deep-well pump room beneath its base with earth, sealing away the damp, echoing chamber that once throbbed with the pulse of underground water.

The hospital changed names with the shifting political tides. It became the Railway Hospital in 1943, the Railway Clinic after the revolution, and the Kaiyuan Railway Hospital in 1958. In 2004, the local government took control, renaming it the Fourth People's Hospital of Honghe Prefecture. The institution dissolved in September 2019, leaving these structures silent. Now designated as a prefecture-level protected relic, the site preserves the physical intersection of French architecture, early industrialization, and Chinese civic life. Visitors can stand beneath the shadow of the concrete tower, touch the weathered wood of the outpatient doors, and hear the distant hum of the remaining narrow-gauge trains.
