Former Site of Jinjiang Gate of Nanxi City Wall
Yibin, Sichuan, China
The Nanxi City Wall traces a rugged, gray line along the northern bank of the Yangtze, a stone barrier that has defined the boundary between the city and the river for nearly six centuries. Walking along the preserved kilometer of this fortification, visitors encounter the formidable masonry of the Wenming, Guangfu, and Wangying gates. Yet, the Jinjiang Gate presents a different kind of historical encounter: it exists today as a conspicuous absence. Once one of nine portals that punctuated the defensive circuit, the gate collapsed years ago, leaving a gap in the ramparts that reveals the vulnerability of even the sturdiest architecture.
The Jinjiang Gate stood on this critical threshold, regulating the flow of goods to the busy docks below while protecting the populace from the chaos of the river basin. Although the physical structure is gone, the planned reconstruction of the gate signals a move to heal this breach in the city’s silhouette.
