Former Residence of Tang Jiyao in Huize

In 1889, a scholar named Tang Xuezeng purchased a modest residential compound in Huize, located along Sandao Alley. His son, Tang Jiyao, spent his childhood within these walls before departing for military studies in Japan in 1904. Built in 1867 during the Tongzhi reign, this traditional four-corner courtyard, or siheyuan, spans 850.1 square meters, with 410.1 square meters of built space. Its structure relies on a post-and-tie timber-frame design, topped by flush gable roofs that shield fourteen rooms from the mountain rains.

The layout follows a strict south-to-north axis, and the main gate opens to the east. In the front courtyard, the three-room main hall stands 11.87 meters wide, flanked by symmetrical east and west study rooms. Here, young Tang Jiyao mastered the classical texts that enabled him to top the local civil service examinations at age fifteen. In the back courtyard, a stone well still holds water, its cool stone rim worn smooth by decades of wooden buckets. Nearby, the kitchen and grain warehouse speak to the domestic rhythms of a middle-class Qing Dynasty household.

The house has absorbed the shifting tides of Chinese history. Following the rise of the People's Republic, the original horse stable was demolished in the 1950s. The government partitioned the compound to house nine local agricultural families, whose daily lives left soot on the rafters and wear on the floorboards. In 2002, the local government relocated these families to restore the property. Between 2016 and 2017, traditional artisans repaired the damaged wooden doors, windows, and panels, applying historic paintwork techniques to preserve the original aesthetic.

Today, the site operates as a public museum. Visitors walk past the restored timber columns and look at historical photographs, military telegrams, and maps from the 1911 Revolution and the National Protection War. The quiet courtyards contrast with the grand scale of Tang's later life as a military strategist, the founder of the Yunnan clique, and the co-founder of Yunnan University. The residence remains a physical record of a provincial childhood that shaped the modern history of southwest China.
