Former Residence of Nie Er in Kunming

In 1884, builders raised a modest two-story, double-eaved residence of brick, earth, and wood on Yongdao Street. From above, its square, high-walled layout resembled a traditional "Yikenyin"—a stone seal stamped onto the red earth of Kunming. In 1905, Nie Hongyi and Peng Jikuan arrived from Yuxi, renting this compact 110-square-meter space to open their traditional pharmacy, Chengchun Hall. The air downstairs filled with the bitter, earthy scent of drying herbs, roots, and simmering medicinal teas.

Here, on February 14, 1912, their son Nie Shouxin—later known as the composer Nie Er—was born. His childhood unfolded within a tight, practical geography designed for survival: a front-shop, back-residence layout centered around a tiny ten-square-meter courtyard. Rain dripped from the double eaves into this stone-paved lightwell, where his mother sang local folk lantern music to him. Upstairs, in the cramped, low-ceilinged attic bedroom, the family slept. To reach it, Nie Er and his brothers crawled up a steep, narrow wooden ladder, stooping under rafters where a growing child could scarcely stand upright.

Hardship defined these rooms. After his father died in 1916, his mother ran the clinic alone, struggling to keep the business afloat. By 1920, the family could no longer afford the rent and faced eviction, leaving their childhood home behind. Decades of wear left the timber rotting and the floors sagging until a meticulous 2010 restoration salvaged the building. Craftsmen numbered and repaired the original components, preserving the delicate wood carvings on the window frames, brackets, and beams.

Today, the building stands as a provincial-level protected site. Visitors run their fingers over the restored wooden columns, climb the narrow stairs, and stand in the quiet attic. The small pharmacy downstairs and the replica bedroom upstairs preserve the memory of a boy who listened to the sounds of the street and the songs of his mother, eventually composing the national anthem that would define a nation's march.
