Eastern Qing Tombs Jingling Mausoleum Sacred Way Stone Statues

The Sacred Way of the Jingling Mausoleum in Zunhua, Hebei Province, winds through the landscape in a gentle, serpentine curve. Here, five pairs of monumental stone statues, known as shixiangsheng or wengzhong.

The stone carvers of the mid-Qing period abandoned the rugged, blocky style of earlier generations. Instead, they left delicate chisel marks that define the smooth surfaces of the stone. The civil and military officials stand in formal Qing court robes, their stone embroidery catching the shifting forest light. The lions wear carved neck bells that seem to invite a touch, while the elephants carry heavy treasure vases on their backs, symbolizing stable imperial rule.

The quiet rustle of the surrounding pines and the cold, solid weight of the carved marble connect modern observers directly to the court politics of the Qianlong era and the quiet filial choices of the Kangxi Emperor.
