Situated along Xinfen Road, right beside the leafy expanse of Dongguan People's Park, the Dongguan Science Museum stands as a quiet anchor in a rapidly modernizing city. Established in 1992 and opened to the public in the fall of 1994, the building’s architecture captures the civic ambitions of a bygone era. Towering glass skyscrapers now define much of the local skyline. Amidst this new development, the 13,000-square-meter complex retains a distinct historical gravity, inviting visitors to experience the origins of the city's commitment to public education.
Inside, the museum dedicates over 5,000 square meters to exhibition space, organized to guide curious minds through the fundamental laws of nature. The ground floor hosts rotating thematic displays, ranging from the ecology of desert landscapes to the mechanics of human metabolism. Moving upward, the permanent galleries translate complex scientific principles into tactile experiences. Visitors can observe the physical realities of the Pythagorean theorem, watch a metal egg stand upright under the force of rapid rotation, and study the movement of sand shaped by varying acoustic frequencies. A 2014 renovation modernized these spaces, introducing a 3D cinema and expanding the interactive zones to keep pace with contemporary scientific education.
For fifteen years, the museum’s "Mobile Science Museum" initiative has traveled across Dongguan, bringing interactive exhibits to schools and community centers in every district and town. This outreach program has engaged over 700,000 residents, establishing the museum as an active participant in the region's intellectual life. Recognized by the Chinese Academy of Sciences as an official astronomy base, the museum serves multiple roles. It functions as a training center, a lecture hall, and a gathering place for youth. It remains a central fixture in Dongguan’s cultural landscape. A visit here offers a direct encounter with the physical world, encouraging a hands-on approach to understanding the forces that shape our universe.
