Donggua Guanyin Monastery in Chuxiong

At the edge of Chuxiong City, the Route 12 public bus pulls up to a stop named after a sanctuary. This is the Donggua Guanyin Monastery, an active Buddhist temple in Yunnan Province that has served its community since the late Qing Dynasty. Originally known as Guanhai Lou (Sea-Viewing Pavilion), the temple was destroyed during the turmoil of the late Qing Dynasty and later rebuilt under the patronage of Li Weishu, a native of Donggua. Its presence is so deeply felt that it gave its name to the local Guanyinsi Village Group and the nearby Guanyinsi Resettlement Housing Estate. High-density residential blocks press close to the temple grounds. Inside, the ancient rhythms of devotion persist.

The monastery‘s history is bound to the memory of Ta’ao Nainiang, a legendary Yi woman and skilled physician whose life is shrouded in local folklore. Her healing hands became legend. The Qianlong Emperor later bestowed upon her the title ‘Western Spirit Holy Mother,’ which was inscribed on a plaque that still hangs in the main hall. This imperial decree solidified the Ta‘ao Assembly, a major regional festival. Every year on the sixth day of the eleventh lunar month, devotees carry her statue from her shrine on West Mountain to the Yunyin Temple in the eastern suburbs. On the sixth day of the first lunar month—her birthday—they return her to the Western Spirit Holy Mother Hall on E’lu Mountain.

The monastery stands as a quiet coordinate where imperial history, indigenous memory, and modern urban life meet. Today, visitors still gather here to seek blessings, their quiet prayers mixing with the scent of incense.
