Deyun Monastery on Miaofeng Mountain, Yunnan

In 1626, Chan Master Cheyong climbed the slopes of Miaofeng Mountain in Yunnan, guided by the legend of celestial music echoing through the forest. Here, at an elevation of over two thousand meters, he and his disciple Wuzhu founded Deyun Monastery. They aligned the temple along an east-to-west axis, facing the setting sun. Every evening, the surrounding peaks turn a deep, bruised purple, a natural phenomenon known as "Miaofeng Wan Cui."

The physical structure of the monastery reflects the materials of the mountain. Builders raised sun-dried earth walls, laid cool blue brick floors, and capped the two-story timber frames with gray-tiled roofs. In the Grand Hall, they used the "qishang muzhao" style, leaving the heavy wooden roof framing exposed to show the joinery of the carpenters. Outside, a half-moon-shaped release pond catches the mountain light, while the cold, sweet waters of the Yongzhu Spring flow through the grounds. More than three hundred ancient cypress trees, now four centuries old, shade the five successive courtyards.

Human history has left physical marks on these stones. In December 1638, the geographer Xu Xiake arrived, seeking Master Cheyong. Though the abbot was away, Xu stayed for two nights, listening to the wind in the cypresses. He wrote a poem about his stay, which later hands carved into the temple walls. Centuries later, during the Qing Dynasty, fires gutted the halls, prompting generations of monks to rebuild the structures during the Qianlong, Jiaqing, and Guangxu eras.

The twentieth century brought different voices. In 1947, soldiers of the Democratic Coalition Force camped in these courtyards. Between 1973 and 1983, local children filled the rooms when the monastery served as a middle school. In 2004, the artist-monk Shi Yanyan became abbot, restoring the Zen traditions. He gathered the brushwork of modern scholars, carving one hundred and two stone tablets to create a calligraphy forest. Today, visitors can run their fingers over these modern inscriptions, feeling the deep grooves of the chisels alongside the ancient poetry of Xu Xiake.
