Daqing TV Tower
Daqing, Heilongjiang, China
Emerging from the sub-arctic wetlands of Heilongjiang, the Daqing Radio and Television Tower functions as the vertical axis of a city defined by its subterranean wealth.
Completed in 1989, this 260-meter steel lattice rises above the Sartu District as an architectural echo of the thousands of oil derricks scattered across the surrounding plains. Its hexagonal framework and quadrilateral mast, weighing a combined 2,600 tons, display the naked industrial aesthetic of a region built on petroleum extraction. While its primary utility lies in the invisible transmission of radio and television waves, its physical presence anchors the skyline, offering a vantage point where the rhythmic nod of pumpjacks meets the expanding urban grid.
The structure stands as a permanent artifact of the city’s late-20th-century ambition, marking the moment when a resource outpost solidified its status as a modern metropolis.
