Daqing Fengshou Village Residential Area
Daqing, Heilongjiang, China
To enter the Fengshou Village residential area is to navigate a landscape that actively repels visitors. After thirteen years of neglect, the access roads have disappeared beneath wild overgrowth, and the mid-rise structures shed their exteriors in unpredictable cascades of glass and concrete.
Built in the 1980s as standard work unit—housing for Daqing’s industrial workforce, these gray blocks once hummed with the collective domesticity of the oil city. Their current, ghostly state invites misinterpretation, often framing the ruins as symbols of industrial decay. The reality is distinct: the community emptied out in 2010 because the residents moved to modern apartments in the city center. The complex remains a hollowed-out exoskeleton, standing in the long silence between its useful life and its final demolition.
