Daming Pagoda

The Daming Pagoda is located in Ningcheng County, Chifeng, Inner Mongolia, China. For the thousand years since its construction, the height of the Daming Pagoda has been impossible to ignore. Built during the Liao Dynasty in the 11th century, the pagoda stands at a towering 80.22 meters. To put this into perspective, the tallest surviving ancient Roman building, the Colosseum, stands at 57 meters, while the Pantheon reaches 43 meters. If we include the Byzantine Empire, the tallest structure, the Hagia Sophia, measures 55 meters.

During the 11th century, and even a thousand years prior, the tallest buildings in the world included Buddhist pagodas in the East Asian cultural sphere, Islamic minarets, South Asian Buddhist pagodas, and Mayan temples. Even so, their heights likely did not surpass 80 meters. The only structure comparable to the Daming Pagoda is the Liaodi Pagoda in Ding County, Hebei, built by the Northern Song Dynasty, a contemporary of the Liao Dynasty. Both pagodas, constructed in the 11th century, reach heights exceeding 80 meters and have long been considered the tallest ancient buildings in China.

This signifies that during that period, the Northern Song and Liao Dynasties possessed two of the tallest structures in the world, at least among the tallest. If there had been an extraterrestrial civilization observing Earth, these two prominent landmarks would certainly have been noticeable.

However, this comparison excludes a category of ancient structures over a thousand years old, namely pyramids, including those in Egypt and the Americas. These structures can exceed 100 meters in height and are notably resilient. Despite their immense construction scale, they are structurally simple, resembling artificial mountains. Consequently, they are generally not included in comparisons of this nature.
