Chuxiong Yanta Pagoda

At the summit of Yanta Mountain, the Chuxiong Yanta Pagoda stands as a monument to human ambition and survival. Also known as Nanshan Yanta, this 17.7-metre-tall, seven-storey square brick structure has watched over the southern suburbs of Chuxiong for centuries. Traditionally dated to 1554, the pagoda was originally built as a fengshui tower to suppress floods in the nearby Longchuan River. Its name and form were inspired by the Wild Goose Pagoda in Chang'an, where successful imperial examination candidates would inscribe their names—a tradition that gave the pagoda its enduring association with scholarly achievement.

At the base, which measures 3.82 metres wide, stonemasons carved reliefs of carps leaping over the dragon gate, a visual promise of social mobility through study. Above this red sandstone foundation, the solid brick body rises in seven dense-eaved tiers. From the second storey upward, arched niches indent each of the four faces, casting dark shadows against the grey brick.

In 1680, a massive earthquake shattered the region, reducing the original tower to rubble. In 1706, Prefect Lu Xun led the reconstruction of the structure. The builders crowned the new peak with a heavy, cast-copper pavilion. Inside, they placed a bronze statue of Kuixing, the Daoist deity of writing and examinations, holding his brush aloft. At the roof corners, they secured chain-locked, goose-shaped golden birds, or Garudas, designed to glint in the high-altitude sun. These figures served a dual purpose, blending Buddhist protection with local folklore.

Today, the pagoda resides on the campus of Chuxiong Normal University. In 1986, it was listed as a municipal-level cultural relic, and in 2012, it was designated a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit. It remains a physical record of religious syncretism, where Buddhist architecture, Daoist deities, and Confucian aspirations merge. Students still walk beneath its shadow, their voices joining the quiet rustle of the mountain wind, connecting modern education with the ancient search for knowledge.
