Chuxiong Futa Park

High on the summit of Dongshan Peak in Yunnan, the Chuxiong Futa stands as a monument to human hope and historical resilience. This fifty-nine-meter-high, octagonal, nine-story tower of reinforced concrete occupies the exact site of the Ming Dynasty Suoshui Tower. That original brick structure served as a crucial navigation landmark for Flying Tigers pilots during World War II before its demolition in 1969. In 2001, local citizens and the Chuxiong Prefecture CPPCC mobilized private donations to rebuild the landmark, transforming it into a sanctuary of blessing culture.

Visitors ascend ninety-nine stone steps to reach the pagoda, passing through air often scented by the nearby cherry blossom pathway. At the base, the cool red sandstone walls are carved with the Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, and Black Tortoise. These stones bear the brushed strokes of emperors Tang Taizong, Song Huizong, Qianlong, and Daoguang, who each wrote the character for blessing, "Fu." Inside the first-floor hall, a massive bronze coin, the Wanfu Tongbao, gleams under the lights.

The tower functions as a physical archive of language. Across its nine levels, nine thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine characters for blessing are carved, painted, and cast. These inscriptions preserve ancient oracle bone script, bronze inscriptions, and classical calligraphy alongside the living scripts of minority groups, including the Yi, Dongba, Tibetan, and Uyghur. Each floor represents a distinct aspiration, climbing from wealth on the first floor to longevity on the ninth.

To the south, a six-point-nine-meter bluestone stele features a "Fu" character handwritten by Mao Zedong, backed by the engraved history of the tower. Nearby, the massive bronze tripod, the Wanfu Baoding, anchors the plaza. At the very top of the tower hangs the Hundred Blessings Bell, a bronze instrument weighing one-point-two metric tons and standing one-point-forty-eight meters tall. When struck, its deep resonance carries over the city, connecting the modern streets below with centuries of prayers for peace.
