Chuxiong Confucian Temple

In 1387, builders laid the first stones of the Chuxiong Confucian Temple at the foot of Fengming Mountain. Eighty-two years later, in 1469, workers moved the entire county temple to the city's eastern corner. During the Jiajing era, the prefecture temple rose right next to it, and in 1683, following an imperial order to rebuild after an earthquake, the two institutions were merged into a single sanctuary.

The earth shook in 1680, severely damaging the halls. In 1683, the imperial court ordered a reconstruction, and in 1709, further additions were made. Yet war damaged the complex again in 1860, and the community once more undertook repairs during the Tongzhi era. In 1932, the temple became home to Lucheng Primary School, which had been founded in 1906, beginning a century of shared space where children's laughter bounces off ancient timber.

Today, visitors cross the rectangular Pan Pool, a quiet body of water with three single-arch stone bridges—the Sanyuan Bridges—rising above it, known locally as "three mountains and four seas". Ahead stands the Dacheng Hall. It is five bays wide and three bays deep, crowned with a double-eave hip-and-gable roof. Eighteen wooden lattice doors line the front, their surfaces carved with classical Confucian texts and decorative patterns.

In 1987, the temple was designated a provincial-level cultural relic, and in 2013, it was listed as a National Key Cultural Relic Protection Site. The restored roof tiles catch the Yunnan sun, casting a warm glow over a courtyard where history is a daily companion.
