China Lantern Museum
Zigong, Sichuan, China
The China Lantern Museum is a permanent stone structure dedicated to the most ephemeral of arts. Located in Zigong’s Lantern Park, the building acts as a monumental anchor for a city defined by fleeting festivals. Its architecture announces its purpose immediately, with the main hall designed to resemble a colossal, glowing lantern. This literal interpretation of form dissolves the boundary between the container and the content.
Inside, the galleries present a lineage of ingenuity that separates Zigong from other lantern-making traditions. The exhibits strip away the night’s magic to reveal the engineering underneath. Visitors see how local artisans repurposed the materials of their daily lives—glass medicine bottles, porcelain dishware, silkworm cocoons, and bamboo strips—to create luminous sculptures. The space emphasizes the sheer labor required to bind thousands of ceramic bowls into the shape of a dragon, turning heavy, opaque objects into sources of radiance.
While the exterior imposes a grand silhouette against the Sichuan sky, the interior functions as a darkened stage. The architecture recedes, allowing the illuminated artifacts to float in the void. It preserves the memory of centuries of festivals, holding the energy of the New Year celebration in suspension.
